The word Baqir is derived from Baqara meaning to open up or to expand. Our 5th Imam was titled as Baqir because of the fact that he introduced and propagated the knowledge in all orientations in a manner which was never before. His name was Muhammad ibn Ali (A.S.) and Kuniyat Abu Jafar. Imam (A.S) was born in Madina in 57 AH. Imam Muhammad Baqir is the son of the 4th Imam, Imam Ali Ibn e Hussain (A.S) known as Imam Sajjad (A.S). Imam s (A.S) mother is Lady Umm e Abdullah, daughter of Imam Hasan (A.S). He was the only Imam who was Alawiite from both the side of the Mother and the Father.
Imam (A.S) was transferred the responsibility of leadership and imamate in 95 A.H. He successfully shouldered the responsibility till his Shahadat in 114 A.H for 19 years. Imam (A.S)taught his followers the knowledge of Deen, Quran, morals and ethics of life. He also trained people in scientific subjects. Great learned men benefited from his knowledge and science and used to ask him to solve their problems.
Imam (A.S) witnessed the tragic event of Karbala. He was only two and a half years old when he faced the hardships along with Imam Hussain (A.S) and the family of Rasool (S.A.W.W.).After detention he returned to Medina in 62 A.H. He was 4 then.
During the Imamat period of Imam Baqir (A.S),several revolts and wars broke out in the Abbasid dynasty. It was due to the cruelties and tyranny of the Abbasid rulers. There were also disputes among the Abbasid rulers. Moreover, the event of Karbala attracted people to Ahlul Bait (A.S).
All these factors contributed to the multitude of people to come before Imam A.S and absorb knowledge of diversified fields. This was a favorable time for Imam (A.S) to preach and propagate Islam.
It is a proven fact that Prophet Mohammad (SAWW) had informed about the birth of Imam Mohammad Baqir (SAWW) about 64 years before his birth. Sheikh Saduq states in his book Amali (page 353) - Imam Jafer Sadiq (A.S) narrates that one day Prophet Mohammad (SAWW) said to Jabir bin Abdullah Ansari:
"you will stay alive until you meet my son Mohammad bin Ali bin Hussain bin Ali bin Abi Talib (Peace be Upon All of them) who is mentioned in the Torah as Baqir. Give him my salutation (salaam) when you meet him".
One day when Jabir visited Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (A.S), he saw the young boy sitting next to the Imam (A.S). He addressed the young boy and asked him to come closer and show his back. Then he proclaimed that by God, that young boy had the features and traits of the Prophet Mohammad (SAWW). Then he asked Imam Sajjad (A.S) who the young boy was and Imam (A.S) replied that he was his son and the successor to the Imamat and his name was Mohammad Baqir (A.S). Hearing this, Jabir rose up and kissed the young Imam and said:"Son of Prophet (SAWW), may I be taken ransom for you, accept the salutation (salaam) of Prophet (SAWW). He asked me to convey it to you".
Imam Jafer Sadiq (A.S) states that his father burst into tears on hearing this and said:"Jabir my salutation to my grandfather until this sky and earth survives. You conveyed the salaam of my grandfather to me so I convey my salaam to you as well".
In 100 A.H ,a known enemy of Ahlul Bait, Hasham bin Abdul Malik (cursed) became the Caliph.During his last days of Caliphate he visited Makkah for Hajj.He was informed that Imam Baqir (A.S) had delivered a sermon saying that Imam (A.S) and his son (A.S) were Allah representative on Earth and their friend will be rewarded with Jannat(Paradise) and enemy will be thrown to Dozakh(Hell).Hasham got furious at this.
He ordered imprisonment of Imam (A.S) .During imprisonment Imam (A.S) used to deliver sermons to the prisoners and his teachings gained popularity. The prisoners became devoted to Imam (A.S). Fearing the possibility of revolt, Hasham released Imam (A.S).
He then ordered the governor of Medina to poison Imam Baqir (A.S) as Imam (A.S) became a constant threat to him. The cursed governor carried the orders of Hasham and poisoned Imam (A.S) in 114 A.H. Imam Muhammad Baqir (A.S), lived in this world for a period of 57 years, and in the 114th year of the Hijra, on the seventh day of the month of Zil-Hijjah, in Medina he left this world. His body was buried in Jannat ul Baqi alongside the graves of Imam Hasan (A.S) and Imam Sajjad (A.S) in Medina.
