Details:

The 4th of July, 2003, was a sunny Friday in Quetta. Momineen were heading toward Masjid–e–Shia Athna Asheri (Kalan) even before Adhaan. Among the worshippers were five enthusiastic children accompanying their fathers and grandfathers. Five year- old Muhammed Naqi was one of the youngsters who came to the mosque with this father, Sheikh Nazar, and his grandfather Mazher. Eight-year-old Ali Akbar was also with his father Yaqub Ali. Tassawer Abbas was eleven- years-old. Rajab Ali, and Syed Mustafa Zaidi were both sixteen. All advanced to the house of Allah where they should have been safe and secure. Regular Momineen were already among the congregation gathering to offer the greatest “IBAADAAT” of Islam. Among them seventy- year-old, Ramadhan, was waiting to bow his head in front of the absolute Lord in an atmosphere of calm and serenity with only one intention in mind. To perform congregational worship. Some were performing wudhu, some sitting in the front rows quietly, while< /o:p> others were performing nawafils. Then the prayer leader entered as the Moazzin recited “Adhaan” over a loudspeaker. The call of “ Hayya al Khair il Amal “ reverberated the blessings of martyrdom in the hearts of momineen. After the Khutba-e-Juma, prayers began. It was the second prostration of the Second Rakat of the salat that exactly at 1:47 PM PST, four terrorists holding AK-47 assault rifles and hand grenades o:p> entered the mosque, and after chanting slogan “ALLAH O AKBAR” first open fired on the prayer leader’s driver, Muhammed Yunus. Their second target was 70 year old martyr Muhammed Ramadan who breathed his last under the shadow of Alam of Ghazi Abaas (AS). Now the terrorists indiscriminately fired on Namazis in prostration. The attackers moved forward while one stayed at the main gate. One gunman positioned himself on the southern side of the mosque started to spray bullets inside the main hall from the windows explicitly targeting the prayer leader and front row of namazis. Many from the congregation attempted to shield themselves behind pillars and windows. On the other side the two attackers in the courtyard coldly fired until they ran out of ammunition then calmly reloaded. They moved with calculated precision as they searched among their vi ctims for any survivors. The wounded they found were shot at point blank range. They showed no mercy toward either the elderly or the children. At this moment Mirza Riaz Hussain rushed toward the attackers chanting slogan, “ YA ALI MADAD!” Others from the congregation followed Riaz's example, even those wounded and rushed toward attacker, who turned his gun toward Riaz and fired at him, while retreating to the courtyard. But the follower of Lion ofAllah Martyr Riaz rushed towards the attacker even though he had been hitseveral times in the chest. The attacker emptied his magazine and before he had a chance to reload, he was over-powered and managed to kill him. This mosque has only Shia Juma Congregation held in Quetta City andapproximately seven thousand momineen gathered every Friday to offer Jumaprayers. It was the inside resistance from this early morning congregation thatprevented an even higher death toll. They prevented another attacker fromthrowing a live hand grenade inside the hall by the brave act of Haji AbdulWahid s/o Abdul Ali, who threw a steel stool at him, thus knocking the grenadefrom his hand. Wahid then tried to catch the grenade to throw it outside, but itexploded. He gave his life but his body had shielded others from the blast.Another attacker continued his ruthless spraying of bullets from the windows ofsouthern side of the mosque, shattering glass and plaster everywhere. The frontrow namazis were his victims but suddenly prayer leader’s guard returned firefrom inside resulting in the wounding of the attacker. He was captured and itis hoped that the truth of who is behind these vicious and cowardly attacks willbe revealed with interrogation. Some points to ponder: It was the 7th attack on the Shia community in the last three months in Quetta. Tension and security measures were on high alert as the Prime Minister was also in the city at the time of tragedy. Yes even under these circumstances there was no government security available for gathering of thousands of Shias? For more than 20 minutes this game of death continued, yet still no security agencies arrived. Jamia Masjid Ithna e Asheri (Kalan) is surrounded by three police stations. The city police station was three minutes away from the mosque which is in its jurisdiction. Gawalmandi police station was four minutes away, and Quaidabad police station was on five minutes away from the Masjid. But NO police appeared for the rescue! When the firing started mobile phone distress calls were placed from inside the mosque to the police emergency numbers but there was no response.. There were even calls to the Edhi ambulance service, but again there was no response. When our team interviewed the survivors and witnesses, one local resident toldus that when he heard the gunshots, he immediately called city olice and wastold police were on their way. After 4 – 5 minutes he again rang back as firing continued and he was told that police already been sent. But all surviving witness inside the mosque said that no police ever arrived from anyof the three near-by stations. Nor were ambulances ever sent, forcing them to transport the wounded with public vehicles. Nor was a duty officer in the emergency ward of Civil Hospital at that time, and this is something highly irregular for the biggest public hospital of the city, where there is always supposed to be a 24 hours presence of duty officers. The lack of doctors at the Civil Hospital forced the move of fifteen critically injured victims to CMH Quetta.. And due to this many victims succumbed to their injuries. On that Friday contrary to the traditions all Ahl-e-Sunnat Jumma congregation, prayers were ended before 1:30 pm. The well-known, Wahabbi Institute of Quetta and well-known safe heaven for terrorists, was unexpectedly closed two days before the attack on the Shia mosque. The one attacker who was captured and handed over to the police and who was not seriously injured, also mysteriously died before he issued a statement whileunder police custody at CMH Quetta. After all is said and done, the facts have revealed that there is a strong case to suggest that Pakistan government if not involved directly in the mosque attack, is certainly protecting and harboring the terrorists. Thus the government is enabling and inviting more attacks on the Shia communities in Pakistan

Examplary Family of Martyrs

From the inception of Pakistan until now, the family of 17 year-old Mustafa Haider, who was martyred in the worst ever terrorist attack in the history of Quetta on Shittes, came from a distinguished family who contributed more than forty martyrs defending the nation. Mustafa Haider’s uncle Major Riaz Hussain gave his life in Siachen, Kashmir in 1988 and was awarded the Medal of Excellence and Sitara-e-Jurrat for his bravery.
Mustafa’s father was a very active personality in the community. When we interviewed him to learn more about the life of Mustafa, he told us his son was an honor student at his college. He described Mustafa as very kind and gentle natu red. Furthermore, told us that when sectarian tension had risen in the city, while he prepared his family for the worst he never knew that his son would take a lead in drinking the pure water of martyrdom.
"Whenever we would hear the Adhaan of Juma, it will always now remind us our son," said the proud but grieving father."Earning martyrdom is a great honor, and without a doubt we feel pride in being parents of a martyr." He added that they prayed that Allah would also include them in the list of martyrs.

Despite the positive reflection of the tragedy, we wanted to ask how he felt knowing that many families now have to dealt with losses of loved ones. How many more mothers would have to weep on their young sons as Imambarghas, mosques, offices and homes are being attacked?

We request scholars, our scholars, intellectuals and those with influence to make clear strategy for the nation and inform the nation its responsibilities and obligations.

Mustafa Haider’s mother told us that when she heard the martyrdom news she didn't scream like any ordinary mother. She thanked Allah Almighty for the honor of being a martyrs mother! Mustafa’s mother also lead the historical protest rally of more than 2500 women of Quetta starting from Alamdaar Road and ended on Muree Abaad Graveyard (Bahesht e Zehra AS). In the rally there were congratulations to Mustafa’s mother for her son’s martyrdom. Her reply was,"For sure I deserve co ngratulation, but if I knew my son was leaving for martyrdom. I would sent him with a new suit and weapons, and with prayers to the battlefield to fight with enemies as did Hazrat Ali Akbar (AS). May Allah accept our sacrifice and forgive our all sins due to my son," the proud mother concluded.
